Mature and rational responses to feminist critique of fantasy/video games
"Lets see: on one side theres Mythic and GW: two private companies who own and license ID and can do whatever they want with it. On the other side theres you.

Instead of ing don't bye the game; we got enought of a server population problem as it is. Go play wow and jerk off to your dancing night elves. Leave WAR alone."

- gingil

"Also, I find it offensive that you find chivalry offensive! How dare you, when I man treats you with respect it should be an honor. You want to be treated equal when women clearly are not. Men are stronger, men are taller, men are DIFFERENT. Not only physically, but mentally men and women are differant and once you get that through your thick skull we can all be happy. Men are chivalris because women are smaller and weaker and that is what man is for. Defending his female, and treating her with respect is a way of defending her emotionally. Do you want a man to treat you like he does his buds? Like punching in the shoulder, and laughing about it. Wrestling, and cracking jokes. Anytime I've ever cracked a joke to a female she got mad. So obviously you wouldn't want that.

I can understand you not wanting us to abuse you but honestly, come on... It's not that bad..."

[about the above poster] "You're looking into a mirror here. This is the version of you from the other side. Equally as far right as you are left."

- Dreiden

"Vikings and barbarians aren't PC. You'll cast your spells and like it, wench."

- DogOfWar

"There -need- to be gender roles, and men are not some supreme rulers looking down on women in that case.

Men are expected to be manly.

Women are expected to be womanly.

Equality, does not mean absence of gender roles. Equality, is having equal stats regardless of what sex you play.

As for this whole chick bimbo thing, well, what do you expect? EA is a business like any others, and it has a specific clientele it hopes to reach. That is, the middle-class white man.

Dismantle "Sexism" and you might as well dismantle human social behavior in its entirety."

- Samedi

"Well, a lot of history majors who suffered under feminist professors immediately get turned off whenever "agency" and "woman" appear in the same block of text. I know I started having flashbacks."

- Cavell

"this game is sexist cause all the male characters are our typacal fighting characters, there no male that just stay home witht eh kids, there all fighters!

its just a big stereotype!"

- warmaster670 [Oh the irony]

"I wonder if the Warhammer universe empowered women while disciminating against men if we would have this same argument. There are plenty of examples of fantasy where that is the case. Maybe one of them will make an MMO..."

- lycosa [Lol, drows?]

"I was raised by a family of strong women, and I respect them. I believe in women in the military, equal pay, and all of that. If men could be considered feminists, I would (at the risk of sounding transexual or something) declare myself as one. But making insignificant claims of sexism, with not actualy evidence, over an item of artistic license, and even more than that A DAMNED FANTASY VIDEO GAME, boils my blood because you are lessening actual feminist issues. Not only is this not even close to the most important issue for the developers (gameplay is), but I am convinced that your being this damned annoying about this issue actually hurts the feminist cause."

- JakeSnake888

"Erm... *smashes head on table*

So how the hell are you supposed to depict women? Everything is Racist, Everything is Sexist. Damn that Queen elizbeth what a Sexist Whore, How dare she be a ruler with great power - that's just a stock character right?"

- NoneSuch

"I wonder how long a feminist would last in a Chaos Warband? I'm guessing... about 30 seconds. Seriously, I'm all for gender equality and everything, but this is Warhammer, not Candy-Land."

- Lucenius [FEMINISTS LIVE IN CANDYLAND]

Exchange with DeKNF3:
Him: "You're preemptively characterizing certain arguments as illegitimate. Most likely the ones that don't support your original opinion. That's usually not a characteristic of someone who wants a honest discussion, it's a characteristic of an agenda pusher or a troll."
Me: "So which legitimate arguments am I characterizing as illegitimate?"
Him: "The ones you claim you've preemptively dismantled. Don't you even read your own posts?"

"I hate to say it but:

QQ More. My wife doesnt think the game is sexist for not including certain classes as females, the reverse is also true for witch elves for example.

Hardly "Sexist" if it gos both ways.

However your on your little crusade, your rage against the machine and you wont hear reason or logic. This thread is useless. Just another whine, disguised as a legitimate post."

- Yasmir [ GUYS HIS WIFE SAYS SO IT'S OKAY ]

"Edit: To spare the harsh words, I'll some it up: Nice job on the effort, but this is pathetic and it makes me lose my faith in humanity that people will complain about something like this. It's in the lore, deal with it."

- Fireguardian

Enjoy.

Even more depressing than clicking the link earlier and knowing sorrow at the first few replies.

Sometimes I need a reminder that it actually gets worse than the replies I get to feminist arguments on [info]fandomsecrets.

By comparison, now the remaining bad endings of Odin Sphere won't seem so depressing!

At least there were some people who at least understood where you were coming from, even if they quibbled over specifics at times.

To paraphrase one of those TRAUMATIZING FEMINIST PROFESSORS (aka my dad -- who is A MAN NO LESS): "Most of the students I deal with are going to be a waste of time. I teach for that one bright student that gets it. The rest can fuck themselves."

... his student review scores tended to be fairly divided.

I can't even read beyond page one of that thing without getting upset. Like you said, it makes no sense to add men to certain classes but not women to the others. It just doesn't make sense. :^/

Well, maybe it if were a class like "sumo wrestler"...

I think you managed to read further than me. Then again, I don't play the game, so there wasn't the appeal of "lets see how long until something I like is bashed..."

I. I. I can't.

This makes me so upset. "This is a FANTASY, it DOESN'T MATTER!!" And you refuted that point so well in the FIRST FUCKING POST (sorry for the language, uh, !!!) I also hate the guy who is making feminism out to be some "LULZ WHY CAN'T GIRLS BE TANKS" thing, when you're talking about having female characters fill a whole variety of roles and archetypes in games and you're pretty clearly talking about that.

Also -- "If men could be considered feminists, I would (at the risk of sounding transexual or something) declare myself as one." Hahahah.

And god I also want to make an account there just to defend the badassness of Princess Zelda. Agency-- she has it. More than Link!

To be honest, seeing them call Aeris a plot device probably annoyed me the most (Mostly because it was being compounded with this post, to which my initial, very eloquent response was "I WILL FUCKING CUT YOU").

It really isn't worth it. I've been fighting this battle since the day I joined that site and I think the best thing for me to do is to just stop posting there.

I love Zelda. I don't think she's super developed as a character, but I really resent her being categorized as a "stock character" or thrown in the same bucket with Princess Peach. She's way too cool for that.

Oh, completely. Aerith's death is a plot device, Aerith herself? No. Zelda's just my own personal favorite game female, and I have gotten into some real life fights over her status as OoT's master planner. I have a site about it, but it's really poorly written. (I mean, Zelda is both a pirate and a ninja. This alone challenges the very laws of the universe.)

God, people who don't look beyond the pink dress and bow really fucking frustrate me. Good at fighting doesn't mean strong female character, it's about actually having character more than anything, and Aeris does have an in-game personality beyond "healer girl with staff." If you didn't get that, well, try playing FFVII again?

You are pretty much talking to a wall. The fact that they were all "yes it's sexist but it doesn't matter" just staggers the imagination. There are ways to make a sexist universe without having the creation itself be sexist (again, see FEMALES ACTUALLY HAVING CHARACTER) but sexism pretty much always matters. Do people not think that sexism in media has an effect sexism outside of it?

What really drives me crazy is that they actually refer to Aeris as feminine, safe and demure and then call Tifa a strong independent woman archetype... I mean, that's backwards! They're both strong and independent in their own way, but Tifa is a lot more quiet, demure and insecure than Aeris. Plus, who cares if she was a healer? She was easily the best party member because of Fury Brand and Great Gospel.

Zelda was a pirate? In the... scheming and hijacking of the plot, maybe... I am struggling to remember her doing piratey things. But yes, I love Zelda. I've never gotten into any fights over her in real life, just with people online who like to pretend that Shiek is a different character entirely because "Zelda isn't cool enough."

I like how people tried to defend female characters with the Everqueen and Morathi. They're the most developed female characters in the universe and they basically EMBODY the madonna/whore split in an entirely unironic way. They've also fill in other neat roles like "Evil, manipulative and secret mother" and "valiant and beautiful wife in need of protection." It's so frustrating, but I think the body of people who can at least understand what you're saying when you talk about these things is one of the good things about livejournal.

Zelda's a pirate in Windwaker :P So it's technically not the same Zelda, but Nintendo has really worked hard to create a real character out of the NES stock princess. (Same with Ganon, before I become "sexist"!!) And, I get into fights about her, with everybody, because I am an unabashed fan and everyone who plays OoT just doesn't get it. And don't even get me started on the Sheik thing.

White Magic != weak. There are certain problems with white magic when it's a female only skill, but it's often the best skillset in the game. And yeah, I'd take Aeris's limits over everyone elses.

I like the person who was like "she's not actually a virgin!!" That thread just made me angry. And completely agreed re: livejournal. Hell, finding Suikoden fans at all is an argument for LJ.

I... What's not to get about OoT? That Zelda is the grand manipulator of events and you are her clueless (but capable!) servant always seemed kind of obvious to me. I really wish we got to know more about her as a person, but hey, they don't have time for EVERYTHING (though, they really could have just cut Ruto and that would have suited me just fine).

There's also certain gameplay problems with white magic when you have nothing to augment it. This was one of the issues with Yuna. If you didn't want to grind her some black magic on the sphere grid or constantly replace your party with summons she just wasn't very practical...

... That's way off topic.

Anyway, Zelda is awesome, end of story.

I think Zelda's status as unknowable contributed to her status as manipulator, if that makes sense. Seeing her as the unreachable princess and/or the mysterious desert warrior completely suited her purposes, and the fact that she didn't reveal her human (well, Hyrulian?) traits is interesting. NOT THAT I DISAGREE WITH YOU, I am always in the corner pushing the MOAR ZELDA button.

Eh, I didn't have a problem replacing my party members with summons. Really, Yuna for me was overpowered. She was my T.G. Cid, no lie, but I also hated the FFX cast and did not care about improving them. It is true that sometimes white mages can't take care of the enemy alone, but a pure healer is pretty rare nowadays too.

I don't get the people not liking Zelda thing and never have. The problem with when I try to argue it, at least face to face, is that it pretty quickly becomes obvious that I've spent way too much time thinking about Ocarina of Time. With FF, it's even worse, because I'll do things like cite the Ultimania.

I actually hadn't thought of it that way. Then again, I think that we could have known a little bit more about her without compromosing her status as distant and mysterious. I kind of can't help but hold every manipulator of events up to Kreia, though, so it's obviously not fair and you can't expect the same level of development from someone who doesn't even travel around the earth with you.

Even Auron? Please tell me you didn't hate Auron!

I'd be interested in what you've come up with about OOT. I've always given its gameplay precedence in my mind, so I've never really had much to think about.

Well, the Zelda games follow a much different format than KOTOR, and have different goals. Moral ambiguity and elaborate character backstory is definitely KOTOR's thing, and Zelda's never been an RPG so I wish people would stop calling it that. Zelda's themes tend to lie more in the metafictional power of repeating the same story over and over again, and Zelda in OoT is kind of consciously a legend before her own time.

Like I said, I don't hate Auron. I don't really like him that much either, but he's not on my list of things I can't stand.

http://valiantknife.org/zelda <- my really wordy pretentious Zelda site. God, I need to rewrite it, it's been that way since like 2004.
